Over the past week, there has been major cold snap in the weather in North Carolina. The water temperatures dropped very quickly and many sea turtles were unable migrate becoming cold stunned. Symptoms of cold-stunning include listless behavior, hypothermia, frostbite and possible pneumonia.
Antibiotics to prevent pneumonia and vitamin injections have been administered. Fluids have also been given. The turtles are being carefully monitored.
Emerald took some time to "come around" but is fairly active and has started eating well. We are thrilled at the change in the behavior of the 2 cold-stunned greens!
3/19/09 Emerald has been getting a diet of romain lettuce and assorted fishes, has healed beautifully over the last few months and is now medically cleared for release! The four cold-stunned turtles will soon be taken offhsore into warmer waters so they can rejoin the population of sea turtles off our coast. Release photos will be posted.
