How was your first week as an intern?
17 June 2014: My first week as a High School Intern at the South Carolina Aquarium was interesting to say the least. Even though we had training classes prior to prepare us for this, there was nothing like the feeling on the first day when I arrived thirty minutes early and used my fob for the first time at the dock entrance. I was so nervous of course but the smiles on every passing face were very welcoming and I was ready to take on my role. The first day was a little nerve wrecking at first, but it became so much easier …(mostly because of Drew & Ashhh’s sense of humor lol). As the days went by I became more comfortable with engaging with people and children and retaining information to them about the animals at the aquarium. My favorite part would be working with the turtles and alligators; I never thought I would get to a point where the American alligator is now my favorite animal!!! Working here does not even feel like a job because of the amount of fun we all have. It was a great first week and I’m so happy with all the new experiences and friendships I have gained and will never forget this. I am looking forward to see what the future holds, but I will be really sad when the internship is over. ☹
What did you think about helping with Husbandry tasks?
26 June 2014: Helping with husbandry tasks has been actually fun this far. I feel like it is important for us to learn how to take care of the animals and not just know facts about them, plus the husbandry tasks we have are actually enjoyable. So far I have cleaned to saltmarsh and fed Pippen. I enjoyed feeding her because she is not an animal that we see out on the floor often. I enjoy helping out whenever I can and husbandry tasks lets me do just that. Can’t wait to see what’s next! Like cleaning the gator bins, I really like the American Alligator!
You are halfway through your internship, what your thoughts?
7 July 2014: Being halfway through this internship makes me really sad because I enjoy being here so much. I enjoy being on the other side and holding and teaching others about animals and conservation. My friends think working here is sooo cool. They just don’t realize how cool! Just the work environment alone is just so positive and happy that it makes it so much more enjoyable. This internship has given me such a wonderful experience that not many get to have and it will be something that I will always talk about later in life. I enjoy working here so much that after this internship I plan to continue volunteering and possibly even become a part time working in the future
What is your favorite part of the internship so far?
21 July 2014: I would have to say my favorite part of the internship so far is getting the chance to work with so many amazing people and handling animals. Like, who gets the chance to wake up every day or every other day and have fun working with animals? From taking out alligators to feeding stingrays, even doing bird rounds is enjoyable with the people I work with (including COINS & Volunteers). I especially enjoy when it’s around closing time and it’s just a few of us telling jokes and laughing about our day. I have definitely made some friendships that will last a lifetime. (Including Drew & Ashh) (:
What advice would you give future applicants?
2 August 2014:
To future applicants:
Being a high school intern was one of the best things I’ve ever done. When in training classes do not wait until the night before to do your homework, Drew & Ash will know. Always do your best and just have fun, this is probably one of the few jobs that will not even feel like a job. This was such a great opportunity and I’m so glad that I shared it with 9 other great individuals. Also, be yourself! Everyone at the aquarium is different in so many ways and that’s what makes working here that great. I’m truly going to miss this ☹.
Future interns: Please bring me to your friend & family night so I can see my fav animals & my favs Drew & Ash!!!
p.s. I’m getting teary eyed just typing this.
