September 1-30- Discounts to Magnolia Plantation and the Aquarium

Visit two of Charleston’s top attractions for less! Enjoy a $5 discount off the admission price to the South Carolina Aquarium and Magnolia Plantation and Gardens throughout the month of September. Print your coupon here. September 5-7- “Lemur” Day Weekend

After a three-year stay at the Aquarium, our four ring-tailed lemurs will depart for their next adventure. Bid farewell to these playful guests over “Lemur” Day Weekend with animal enrichment and celebratory activities. Visit the Aquarium Monday, September 7 for your last chance to “hang” with the lemur family and join us for the Bon Voyage celebration.

September 7- Paintings with a Purpose

Experience the magnificence of the ocean, sea turtles and other marine life when you view Charleston artist Laura Palermo’s exhibit Paintings with a Purpose at the South Carolina Aquarium. Using acrylic on canvas, Palermo captures the nuance and spirit of her animal subjects. Many of her paintings depict patients that have been rehabilitated in the Sea Turtle Hospital. Palermo’s artwork will be available for purchase with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Aquarium’s conservation programs. Paintings with a Purpose is included with Aquarium admission. September 8- Folly Beach Sweep

6 – 7:30 p.m. 6th Street West, Folly Beach
Help us create a cleaner habitat for shorebirds, sea creatures and our fellow beachgoers! Aquarium staff, members and friends will meet on Folly Beach at 6th Street West to collect trash and debris from the beach. If you have reusable work gloves, please bring them. Free parking is available along the beach side of West Ashley Avenue; park with all tires completely off the pavement. For more information, call (843) 577-FISH (3474).

September 12- Rivers and Rice Plantation Paddle with NAO (A Members-only Event)

1 – 4:30 p.m.
Paddle the gentle blackwaters of Quenby Creek and the Upper Cooper River to a 300-year-old church overlooking acres of abandoned rice fields. See unique birds including purple gallinules and rails, and enjoy fields of wetland wildflowers as fall approaches! Ages 4 and up. $50 for ages 13 and over; $30 for ages 12 and under. September 16- Homeschool Explorers Club: Helping Habitats

10 a.m.- 1 p.m.
Homeschooling families, enjoy a fun-filled day of hands-on education. Learn all about habitats with interactive lessons and academic curriculum led by Aquarium experts. Identify local habitats, discover the animals that live in them, and find out how you can create a habitat for native species in your backyard. Participation is $9 per student in grades K-8, $12.50 per student in grades 9-12, $15 per parent/chaperone, and $5 per member child. Reserve your spot today!

September 16- Southerly Restaurant and Patio: A Good Catch Dinner

6;30 p.m.
Good Catch is cooking up a delicious tapas-style dining experience with Southerly Restaurant & Patio! Hosted in the restaurant’s cooking school, you’ll learn from Chef Matt Martindale as he prepares four courses using local, sustainable seafood and seasonal ingredients paired with wine. September 17- Sharks: Unlikely Allies? A Holland Lifelong Learning Presentation

6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Could sharks save your life? The dogfish shark is emerging as man’s new best friend. Major medical advances for humans through shark biomedical research are on the rise. Join us as expert nephrologist Dr. John N. Forrest, Jr. presents key discoveries linking our species like never before. This educational series for adults is made possible through a generous contribution from Mary and Mason Holland to the Watershed Fund. Free and open to the public. September 19- Shrimp and Grits Charleston

6 – 9 p.m.  Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park
Join us at the 2nd Annual Shrimp and Grits Chefs’ Competition to sample dishes from 20 different restaurants and find out which Lowcountry chef will take the prize for Best Shrimp and Grits. Stop by the tables of our Good Catch partners and visit our booth to learn more about how you can choose sustainable seafood. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door, and $12 for children 12 and under. Get yours today!

September 20- Carolina Green Fair

Noon – 5 p.m.  James Island County Park
Visit us at the Carolina Green Fair! This festival features conservation education through fun and inventive demonstrations, interactive play and music, and education shared by experts in their field. Come celebrate good environmental stewardship and “being green” while enjoying beer, food, music, and Lowcountry artisans! Admission is free with $1 per person regular park admission, and free for Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission Gold Pass Members.

September 26-27- Island Overnight Expedition with NAO (A Members-only program)

September 26 at 9 a.m. to September 27 at 4 p.m.
It’s island time! Explore Capers Island Heritage Preserve and the waters surrounding the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. From the base camp on Capers Island, explore the creeks, estuaries and trails throughout the refuge. Dolphins, sea turtles and over 257 species of birds frequent the area. The expedition includes shelling, a beach campfire, fishing, crabbing and lots of fun! Nature Adventures Outfitters’ boat will take your provisions out for you, so you don’t have to haul anything. Just paddle in your kayak and have fun in the sun.

Arrival is at 9 a.m. on Saturday, and departure from the island is at 2 p.m. on Sunday, returning to the mainland by 4 p.m. Fifty percent of proceeds from this expedition are donated to the Aquarium. Ages 10 and up. $300 for ages 13 and over; $200 for ages 12 and under. Register online or call (843) 568-3222.

October 3- Ocean to Table: Shrimp Baiting Clinic with Lowcountry Boil (A Members-only program)

10 a.m. – noon, Sunrise Park, James Island
Get ready for shrimping season with this hands-on clinic conducted in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Good Catch partner Fleet Landing Restaurant. Find out how to shrimp from both a dock and a boat, learn the basics of shrimp baiting and receive helpful tips to make your shrimping efforts more successful. Drew Hedlund, Fleet Landing Executive Chef, will demonstrate how to prepare a Lowcountry Boil. Recommended for ages 8 and up. $15 per member. Reservations are required. October 6- JumpBunch (A Members-only program)

10 – 10:30 a.m.
Toddlers love JumpBunch! Let your little ones get their sillies out in a fun setting at the Aquarium. Jump, dance, wiggle, skip, play and have fun to music. Recommended for ages 18 months to 4 years. Free for members. Reservations required. To reserve your spot, call (843) 579-8518.

October 6- Gyotaku and Good Catch (A Members-only program)

6:30 – 8 p.m.
Celebrate National Seafood Month while trying your hand at Gyotaku, the traditional Japanese art of fish printing, with oceanographer Nathan West. Unleash your inner artist while learning about Good Catch with Shelley Dearhart, the Aquarium’s sustainable seafood expert. Recommended for ages 10 and up. $10 per member. October 10- Historic Scenic Ashley River Paddle with NAO (A Members-only program)

1 – 4:30 p.m.
Spend the afternoon on a South Carolina Scenic River that encompasses over 26 historic sites! Paddle the gentle twists and turns of the river and enjoy its diverse freshwater and brackish environments. Ages 4 and up. $50 for ages 13 and over; $30 for ages 12 and under. October 21- Saltmarsh Science: What’s Brewing? A Holland Lifelong Learning Presentation

6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Holy City Brewing Tap Room
Discover the connections between a fresh brew and your backyard. Alongside brewmasters of Holy City, fisheries biologist Bill Roumillat will explore the impact of fish ecology in our saltmarsh environments. This educational series for adults is made possible through a generous contribution from Mary and Mason Holland to the Watershed Fund. Free and open to the public. Tickets will be available in late September.

October 24- Toddler Time (A Members-only program)

8 – 9 a.m.
Parents and children alike love to explore the Aquarium in the morning! Our 1- to 3-year-old friends can meet exciting creatures with up-close Animal Encounters and have the Aquarium all to themselves before the crowds arrive. Adults enjoy complimentary coffee and muffins. Snacks for the kids will also be served. Tickets are $10 per member child, and two adults get in free with each participating child. October 29- Fish or Treat (A Members-only program)

5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Beauties and beasts of all shapes and sizes will join the animals at the Aquarium’s annual Halloween event. Members can “fish or treat” throughout the Aquarium, enjoy divers of the deep lurking in the Great Ocean Tank, boogie at the monster mash dance party and join in ghoulish games. November 3- JumpBunch (A Members-only program)
