Kids Who Care

The Aquarium inspires people to care for the natural world, and it’s incredible to see that inspiration come full circle. We couldn’t be more thankful and impressed by our littlest learners and supporters who have made it their mission to save sea turtles alongside us. Let’s introduce you to some of these kids who care!

Meet Sam! For his 8th birthday — and for the fourth year in a row — Sam created a lemonade stand for sea turtles at the Alhambra Hall Playground in early July. Not only did he surpass his goal of $2,000, but alongside his parents, he’s pledged to raise $25,000 from his lemonade stands by the end of his senior year in high school! GO SAM!
Meet Ellis! She and her family came down to Charleston from Greenville to learn more about the sea turtles for which Ellis is fundraising. In the above photo, she is presenting gift officer, Catherine O’Rourke, with a check for $1,800. She also gifted her a beautiful sea turtle painting for her desk and made her colleagues some very special handmade turtles out of small popsicle sticks and yarn.
Meet Lela! She fundraised with a lemonade stand for the sea turtles, too. Above, she’s presenting Catherine with the money she made for the sea turtles in a mason jar!
Meet Lauren! With the help of the Sea Turtle Club from Christ Our King in Mount Pleasant, Lauren went door-to-door with handmade posters raising money for the Aquarium and educating community members about the challenges sea turtles face! Afterwards, her team visited the sea turtles she’s helping to save.
We’re so grateful to these kind-hearted kids for protecting water, wildlife and wild places. Want to help, but don’t know where to begin? Why not become a runner in our annual Turtle Trek 5K and Kids Fun Run this fall?

Run for the turtles! The South Carolina Aquarium Turtle Trek, a 5K sunset beach run/walk and kids’ fun run, will take place Saturday, October 9 on Isle of Palms.

Join us at 4:30 p.m. on Isle of Palms, South Carolina (or virtual for those not in town)! Register by August 31 (a $20 fee) to guarantee your t-shirt, decal and participation ribbon. Remote Runner registration includes a mailed t-shirt, reusable bag, emailed digital race bib and decal. Not only can you be a runner for the Turtle Trek, but you can register as a fundraiser as well and raise money online!

Proceeds from the Turtle Trek support the Sea Turtle Care Center™ and conservation efforts at the South Carolina Aquarium.
