Designed to promote the use of local and sustainable seafood in South Carolina’s restaurants.


Our Program

Sustainable seafood refers to fish that are caught or farmed with consideration for the long-term viability of the species and for the ecological balance of the ocean. Awareness of the oceans and their importance to humans is increasing, but we continue to overfish certain species (removing too many fish from the water). We can choose seafood from local, sustainably managed fisheries to minimize our impact on the environment.


Overfishing Hurts More Than Fish

When a species is overfished it cannot replace individuals as quickly as we remove them and the population shrinks. Depleted fisheries become less profitable and that impacts fishermen and local economies. The Sustainable Seafood Initiative encourages partner restaurants to serve local, seasonal seafood. Take your Seat at our Sustainable Seafood Dinner Series

Join the Sustainable Seafood Initiative at our monthly dinner series. Each month, a different partner restaurant hosts a multi-course sustainable seafood dinner, complete with wine or beer pairings. The dinners are prepared with a side of education from our Sustainable Seafood Initiative staff. Dinners fill up quickly, please check the calendar in advance and call the host restaurant to make your reservations.

Listed restaurants have committed to serve sustainable seafood whenever possible. Our Platinum and Gold Partners have gone above and beyond our requirements. Each product is given a sustainability score on a scale of zero to five, which is then averaged to yield an overall menu score. Restaurants whose menus score between 3.5 and 4 are upgraded to Gold Partners, and those who score a four or above are upgraded to Platinum Partners.
