Paintings for a Purpose:
The Art of Laura Palermo

About the Artist

Experience the magnificence of the ocean, sea turtles and other marine life when you view Charleston artist Laura Palermo’s exhibit Paintings for a Purpose at the Aquarium.

Palermo hopes her beautiful canvases will inspire others to love the marine world and its inhabitants in the same way that living in the Lowcountry has inspired her to become a champion for the sea. Her favorite subjects to paint are sea turtles, an endangered and threatened group of animals that she is passionate about protecting. Upon encountering a sea turtle in the wild shortly after moving to Charleston, Palermo was moved to learn more about the turtles’ plight. She hopes that by capturing their beauty in her art, she will move other people to do the same.

About the Exhibit

Using acrylic on canvas, Palermo captures the nuance and spirit of her subjects. Many of her paintings depict patients in the Sea Turtle Hospital that she has observed at the Aquarium to create detailed and accurate representations of the species.

Palermo’s passion for marine conservation drives her partnership with the South Carolina Aquarium, and her artwork will be available for purchase with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Aquarium’s conservation programs. Paintings for a Purpose is included with Aquarium admission.
