When my wife, Jolene, and I travel, we make a point to visit zoos and aquariums during our stay. On an anniversary trip to Charleston, we experienced the wonder of the South Carolina Aquarium and met an extraordinary employee, Ashley. After observing the staff working with young school groups and seeing the attention given to answering students’ many questions, we knew that this had to be a pit stop for our granddaughter Sara on her upcoming spring break trip to “Camp Ward.”
By the time we left the Aquarium on our next visit, Sara was a believer in marine science. Ashley had set up a behind-the-scenes tour for us, and Sara even got an up-close inspection of reptiles and other critters. She spent the next three days retelling the stories about the trip to everyone that would listen! These moments made a strong impression on a young lady that will be an everlasting joy she’ll never forget.
Every smile we saw on Sara’s and the other students’ faces made it easy for us to become supporters of the Aquarium’s education programs. Sara has made it very clear that taking advantage of the many excellent intern and summer experiences at the Aquarium are high on her priority list for the future. Meeting Ashley on that first visit led to priceless memories with our granddaughter and a new respect for the guest care, environmental concern, and educational value of the Aquarium.
