Sylvia Earle
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Named a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress and “Hero for the Planet” by TIME magazine, accomplished scientist Dr. Sylvia Earle is a staunch advocate for and eloquent champion of our ocean. Earle has achieved an impressive number of firsts — including setting the world untethered diving record, descending 1,250 feet beneath the ocean surface; and serving as the first female chief scientist for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She was also National Geographic’s first female Explorer-in-Residence and founded Deep Ocean Exploration and Research, a marine consulting firm. In 2008, Earle founded nonprofit Mission Blue for marine protection, where she is still president and chairperson. She holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke University, 32 honorary degrees and has received over 100 national and international honors and awards.
