“25” on its own can feel abstract. “25” on its own breezes past the many hands, hearts and hours that shaped the South Carolina Aquarium’s first quarter–century. It’s only when we break “25” down — and pinpoint the people, passion and powerful outcomes throughout those years — that the full picture comes into focus. Because buried within “25” are more numbers, and behind every key number… is you.
When we dive into “25”, a wave of new numbers comes to the surface. In 25 years, 460 sea turtles have been rehabilitated and released back out into the wild; more than 2 million South Carolina schoolchildren have benefited from our slate of educational offerings, and approximately 25 new exhibits have cropped up over the years. Roughly 125,000 dives have kept our saltwater tanks sparkling, while over 3 million pieces of debris have been removed by citizen scientists to help our landscapes shine as well. Our volunteers have devoted 1 million hours to advancing our mission, and in total, more than 10 million visitors have wandered within our walls to connect with water, wildlife and wild places.
