Case History

This little juvenile Kemp’s ridley sea turtle was hooked by a fisherman late at night. This turtle was reported to South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and safely housed by a permit holder overnight. Early the next morning, Marigold was transported to the Aquarium for treatment!

Treatment

Upon arrival, Marigold was quiet but alert. We were happy to find that her/his vitals were looking good! The heart rate was strong, respiration rates were good and blood values were within expected limits. The biggest problem for Marigold was the large fishhook that was embedded in the esophagus. After initial examinations, we believed we were going to need to perform surgery to remove it. However, we tried with light sedation through the mouth first and successfully removed it in this manner! Once Marigold received fluids, vitamins and antibiotics, it was time to test her/his swimming abilities. Marigold did fantastic at swimming and was placed in a tank on the first floor of the Aquarium. Over the next few days, we will begin offering food and have high hopes that Marigold’s appetite will be good!

Updates

June 25, 2025: Marigold was moved into a large tank that is divided into four sections, so s/he is sharing this tank with three other Kemp’s ridleys. Marigold is settling in but was not interested in food right away. This is not uncommon for patients recovering from a hook and line experience Most recently, we were excited to see her/his appetite come back and s/he is now eating! This is a great step forward in the healing process.

July 15, 2025: Marigold is now eating ravenously! Over the next few weeks Marigold will continue receiving antibiotics and putting all of those calories to good work (towards healing and gaining weight). We are planning to tag Marigold in coming weeks to prepare this little Kemp’s for her/his return home.
