Small Choices, Big Impacts: 5 Ways to Choose Local

Pumpkin spice, cozy nights and… a monthlong celebration of local bites! October is National Seafood Month, and it’s the perfect time to savor your cozy fall favorites and dive into the impact of choosing locally and sustainably sourced seafood!

By choosing local, you’re protecting the health of our ocean, supporting your neighbors in the seafood industry and starting dialogues with friends and family!

So, how can you reel in those local options all year long?

1. Ask what’s local

How many times have you asked your server about the market fish or catch of the day? While sticking with a tried-and-true choice never fails, exploring the unique flavors of local species may surprise you… and help you find a new favorite option! By shifting your perspective on what to order, you’re supporting a balanced ocean and uplifting those businesses who believe in the same.

2. Test your chef skills

Sharpen your knives, gather your spices and channel your culinary skills by preparing your own seafood dish! Purveyors and retailers make a dedicated effort to source their seafood options locally and sustainably, or even catch it themselves from our own waters. If you’re not familiar with the proper cooking techniques on a new-to-you catch, don’t be shy — ask those at the counter for their advice!

3. Pull in your own good catch

Trade in your sneakers for boat shoes and take to the open waters yourself! Cast a singular hook and line (and decrease the risk of bycatch!) or throw a net to bring in your own seafood. If you’re more of a captain-in-training, tag along with a friend or book a trip with a local charter company. Don’t forget — mind the rules and regulations for each species’ sizing and seasonality!

4. Try farm-raised

Don’t be afraid to eat oysters outside of the “r” months! Oyster farming methods have been honed to ensure a unique flavor profile and safe-to-eat oyster for us to enjoy year-round.

5. Find a Good Catch partner decal

If you’re unsure which businesses support local and sustainable seafood practices, keep an eye peeled (pun intended) for this official designation. Usually located on a front window, this decal confirms that the business is committed to sourcing a percentage of their seafood locally and sustainably.

While October is National Seafood Month, these are ways you can continue choosing local and sustainable year-round. Find a Good Catch partner near you for your next night out or at-home culinary adventure!
