loggerhead (Caretta caretta)
Stranding Location: Dare, Buxton, NCA
Arrival Date: 01/10/2013
Age: juvenile
Weight: 34 kg. (~75 lb.)
Case History
In an effort to help North Carolina facilities with the large number of cold-stunned sea turtles that stranded in December, three loggerhead sea turtles were transferred to the South Carolina Aquarium’s (SCA) Sea Turtle Hospital on January 10, 2013. Buxton is one of three loggerheads received from the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island.
Treatment
Initial treatment, including antibiotics, was efficiently administered by the NC Aquarium at Roanoke. Buxton’s flight to South Carolina was uneventful, and he is enjoying the good food and filtered tank we’ve provided for him.
Updates
10 April 2013: Buxton has finished treatment, and our vet has officially cleared him for release. Our SC waters are still below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, so Buxton may be released offshore by boat.
