Case History
Hyacinth was hooked by a fisherman on Apache Pier, just north of Myrtle Beach State Park. We extend our thanks to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and their team of permitted volunteers for making the transportation of Hyacinth to the Aquarium possible!
Treatment
Hyacinth arrived at the hospital bright and alert. We found that Hyacinth was healthy and in good body condition during our physical exam. The only issue we needed to address was removing the fishhook. To locate and assess the positioning of the fishhook, we took a radiograph of Hyacinth. The hook was in the upper esophagus, so we decided to attempt removing the hook orally. However, we were prepared to shift gears and take Hyacinth into surgery to remove the hook if needed. Before we got started, we took a blood sample to check her/his health and based on the results, we provided fluids, vitamins and antibiotics. In addition, we elected to remove the fishhook the following morning to give Hyacinth some time to relax.
Updates
June 23, 2025: The morning after admit, Hyacinth was sedated and the fishhook was successfully removed via the mouth. Since then, Hyacinth has been eating, gaining weight and exhibiting more energy. We moved her/him to a tank on the first floor of the Aquarium to continue rehabilitating. Stop by and wave “Shello”!
July 15, 2025: Hyacinth is recovering swimmingly! In the next week or so, s/he will finish antibiotic treatment and now we are focusing Hyacinth’s weight gain. Luckily for us, Hyacinth isn’t a picky eater. We are hoping to tag her/him in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for more updates!
August 15, 2025: Hyacinth has been doing well! This past week Hyacinth received a physical exam and had a blood sample drawn. This preliminary bloodwork will determine how s/he is doing internally to see if release is in the near future!
August 27, 2025: This little Kemp’s was released at Folly Beach County Park! Swim fast, little one!
