Founded in 1676 by the Drayton family, Magnolia has survived the centuries and witnessed the history of America from the American Revolution through the Civil War and beyond. Magnolia is the oldest public tourist site in the Lowcountry and the oldest public garden in America.

With more than 100 acres of flowering plants year round, Magnolia was recently selected as one of “America’s Most Beautiful Gardens” by Travel and Leisure Magazine. Magnolia is the only garden honored with this distinction in South Carolina.

Magnolia offers guided tours of the main house that was once the Drayton family’s home, nature boat and nature train rides and the award-winning “Slavery to Freedom” cabin project. Magnolia also features an unguided walking tour through the 60-acre Audubon Swamp Garden named for naturalist John James Audubon.

Located at 3550 Ashley River Road on the Ashley River, Magnolia is open 365 days a year. Gates open at 8 a.m. and close at 5:30 p.m. For more details, call 843-571-1266 or go to
